COMMITTEE ON THE RIGHTS OF CHILDREN

CRC Theme Day on Violence Against Children

The Committee on the Rights of the Child have devoted one day of general discussion in September 2000 and now another in September 2001 to the theme Violence Against Children.

The first discussion focussed on State violence suffered by children living in institutions managed, licensed or supervised by the State, and the context of “law and order” concerns.   In 2001, the focus will be on the problems of violence suffered by the children in schools and within the family.

CHILD PROTECTION WEEK 2001

Dr Jennifer McIntosh

PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOURS WA INC. –update for 2001

The 2000/2001 year has been a very busy and very successful year for the

Protective Behaviours WA Inc Board and as it comes to a close I would like

To extend a warm welcome to all to attend our forthcoming AGM, which is to be held on September 26 2001 in Seminar Rooms 3 & 4 of the Family & Children’s Services Building, located at 189 Royal Street East Perth. The AGM will commence at 5.30pm for wine and cheese and the official proceedings will begin at 6pm sharp.

There has been many successes for the last 12 months and some of the

Highlights have been as follows:

Safer WA Funding Grant which enabled the board to conduct 23 full day

training sessions throughout the state predominately in the country areas. A

total of 345 persons were trained during these workshops. The board will

Apply for future funding and wait to hear the outcome of it.

St Bartholomew’s Hostel contracted PBWA Inc in order that we provide the

Staff with a one-day training workshop, which was to look at Safety and PB's

In the workplace.  These workshops were carried out over three one day

Workshops and due to the success of same St. Bartholomew’s will include a one day workshop in there future staff induction program.

Currently the board is working with the Ethnic Communities Council in order

to assist with the facilitation of both Basic and Advanced workshops during

the 2001/2002-year. This in itself is very exciting as not a great deal of

work has been done in this area to date by our organisation.

The Constable Care Puppet Show launched the ROBOSIS Puppet Show, which is based on the Protective Behaviours Program and our coordinator Andrea

Musulin assisted with the launch of this puppet show. Vic Evans the CEO of

Constable Care has advised the board that the Robosis Show is the most

commonly requested show that Constable Care has to offer. (For further information on the show contact Belinda Thorne 9472 7533)

Protective Behaviours WA Inc reached Finalist Status in the 2000 Community

Service Industry Awards however although we were extremely pleased and proud

to reach this stage did not win the nominated category.

In August 2001 Protective Behaviours Training will feature as part of

Meerilinga's Training Program and we will be running both Parent and

Professional workshops in partnership with the staff at Meerilinga Training

College.

We have commenced conducting Workshops in conjunction with the Armadale

Aboriginal Affairs Office specifically for Aboriginal people working with

Children in the Cannington Police District. These workshops have been a

Joint initiative of the Cannington Police District Aboriginal Liaison Unit.

Although workshops to date have been well received a lot of work still needs

to be done in this area and we would like to concentrate our efforts in this

area in the near fu

PBWA Inc are hoping to secure a display in the Police Exhibition at the

Perth Royal Show in September/October 2001 alongside the Police Child Abuse

Investigation Unit.

The National Protective Behaviours Conference is being held in Sydney in

November 2001 and PB (WA) Inc will be sending two representatives to attend this

Conference. Anyone requiring further information can contact our office on

0409071068.

There is a great deal more to tell you about however these are to name the

most significant.

The next Basic Training Workshop is being held on October 18 & 19 2001 at

Family & Children's Services and the Advanced workshop in to take place on

November 21 -23 2001 venue Family & Children's Services East Perth. Places

are filling quickly on both of these workshops therefore if you are

interested in attending please contact our office on 0409071068 to secure a
