Launch of Audi Tape Series:

Protective Behaviours Consultancy (WA) are pleased to announce the launch of a new resource, an audio tape series to assist people to implement the program in their lives from the comfort of their own home or whilst travelling in the car. This easy to use type of educational mode will benefit many in revising the principles of the program and will assist in the implementation process.

In commencing the production of this tape and new learning curve for Joan-Claire and Julie West, the concern around making the program available to the general public which of course will also include perpetrators. Perpetrators also need the information of rights and options that are available to them as PB is a holistic program and Peg West talked about "Everyone’s right to feel safe". So in bearing all this in mind Joan-Claire embarked on the project of producing the first of a series of audiotapes.

Joan-Claire deliberated over this issue and finally decided that PB information needs to be 'available' and it would do more good if generally publicised and made available through the National Library System so that parents could gain access to this information readily. In working in this area in the last 10 years, she has found that raising public awareness is not an easy task. There are no quick solutions to raising ‘on-going’ awareness around the issue of Safety and Child Abuse Prevention. It is about readily accessible information via a myriad of outlets and in a myriad of forms and this opens up the possibility for a saturation point. Once that is arrived at; what was discounted as a myth previously is acknowledged and becomes general accepted knowledge. She has observed this with Domestic Violence, once our society and governments acknowledged that the problem existed and it was costing our community big $ to place resources to support that area, then vision plans came alive, and a 10 year plan for Domestic Violence awareness was put into place. Funding and support from both the government sector and public can often come readily at this point. In Joan-Claire’s opinion this is what needs to happen with Child Abuse Prevention. This tape series will play but a small part in that awareness raising process.

Captured in the words of Arthur Schopenhamer:

"New thoughts and new truths go through three stages:

First they are ridiculed

Next they are violently opposed

Finally they are accepted as self evident"

Review of 1999 in PERTH Western Australia:

Safer Seniors Project:

In reviewing the year some exciting breakthroughs happened on the PB innovation front. Being theYear of the Older Person, the PB Inc body was granted funding to present 10 workshops targeting the needs and concerns of Seniors.

It was a pleasure working with such and generous and warm spirited groups of people, who genuinely shared of their experiences knowledge and wisdom in a workshop situation. An example of such a presentation is available under the SLIDE SHOW link on this site.

Most workshop participants agreed that there were lots of benefits gained from attending; feedback comments were such things as:

  • It’s all commonsense really - if you apply it.
  • I am comforted by the fact I am doing all the right things.
  • I didn’t know you could get a mobile phone for $10 a month for emergencies.
  • I will pay more attention to locking my doors even whilst I am gardening.
  • It was great to meet with other people with the same concerns, made me feel better and I was reassured that it wasn’t just my imagination.
  • Everyone should attend one of these seminars to remind them that they have a part to play in their own safety, and an acknowledgement that the police cannot be everywhere.
  • Now I have an action plan - I intend to put it into ACTION.

A very worth while project and in 2000 it is possible that through the Safer WA Committee, more of these valuable seminars can be offered.

City Safe Project - PERTH Western Australia:

JC was part of the City Safe Team, along with several departments of Community Policing, Road Transport Rep, Banking Rep and an amazing Self Defence expert. Together with Dr. Garth Eichhorn as our leader, sponsored by Safer WA and supported by the Perth City Council, the team visited many schools, Seniors Clubs and Service Organisations. The purpose was to present a brief overview of what services where available in the community to support people in keeping safe out and about on the streets, travelling on public transport, utilising the automatic tellers as well as in their homes. This gave the public a taster and introduced them to new concepts and services that were unknown to them. It also served as a reminder of good safety practice that they had perhaps forgotten. If anyone is interested in this service, please call Dr Garth Eichhorn at City Safe on 61 (08) 9481 4734 to find out more about the projects availability for 2000.

Service Clubs:

There was a considerable interest shown from service clubs throughout the year for speakers to attend meetings to give talks on PB. The two organisations that Joan-Claire found most welcoming and interested in perhaps in 2000 sponsoring a project were Rotary and Soroptimists. The most memorable seminar was in the old courthouse on the Fremantle Esplanade delivering an inspiring thought provoking talk to over 100 Soroptimists. Joan-Claire has developed a PowerPoint slide show presentation especially for this type of delivery and will be demonstrated this, possibly in a workshop at the International Conference of Protective Behaviours in SA - "A stitch in Time" in April 2000.

Tom Price Project:

An invitation from the Nintirri Centre in Tom Price the far north of WA, Joan-Claire found herself planning a ‘Safety Week’. Louise Whightman the Community Health Nurse co-ordinated the activities and assisted in some of the presentations, with a 3 month old baby on the hip. The activities organised were:

  • Professionals were in serviced in the principles of PB.
  • Women in the community, gained insights into how to keep safe on the streets.
  • Young Aboriginal women and the elders heard about how to keep kids safe the PB way.
  • A session was held out on a (Aboriginal) Community, in a natural setting.
  • An awareness-raising seminar on the tragic costs to our kids of Domestic Violence.
  • In-service of teachers.
  • 3 classroom sessions working in Tom Price Primary School direct with the children.

JC’s favourite sessions were definitely the children, their responses and enthusiasm for the tasks and activities set were a delight to behold. They all learned the following song perhaps you can teach your class or client group also.

MY BODYS MY BODY MY BODY’S MY OWN

My body jumps it

Can run all around it

Fly’s through the air or

Crawls on the ground

Your body loves to dance and play

Our bodies do whatever you say

My body’s my body no bodies but own

You run your own body let me run mine.

When I am touched I know how I feel

My feelings are mine my feelings are real.

My body’s no bodies, body - but mine

"YES"

You run your own body - let me run mine

"NO"

My body’s my body no bodies but own

You run your body let me run mine

My body’s my body no bodies but own

You run your own body and let me run mine.
