Update On USA Activities by Donna Fortin

Monthly meetings of Certified Trainers are held at the Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin office in Madison, Wisconsin. During these meetings the Trainers share ideas, work out training schedules and work on projects.

The current project, which began in June, 2001 with a two-day retreat is the writing of a USA version of Di Margetts' Training for Trainers Manual. It was an exciting retreat with all the trainers who have been doing PBs for over 15 years, plus three new people and the new Executive Director of Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin. This was followed by one-day meetings to finish up details. At the last meeting we divided up the various sections of the manual to write.

After several years of debate we settled on the re-wording of the second theme. Because the double negatives jarred those of us who are grammarians, we have changed the wording to: "We can talk with someone we trust about anything, no matter how awful or small."

We also have taken out some of the militaristic language, such as "strategies," etc., and they have become "teaching techniques". The teaching techniques now include Feelings are Feelings, Behavior is a Choice, and Language of Safety recently worked up by Di Margetts.

We are also using the term "freethink" instead of brainstorm as it was pointed out by a person with seizure syndrome that a storm in the brain is exactly what happens during a seizure.

Since some of the USA written curricula has recently been revised, it will take some time to reflect these changes. However, Donna Fortin is in the process of revising the manual, "Living Safely for People with Special Needs, based on Protective Behaviors" and is including the changes in the revision.

Two computer programs are available from ASTOP for elementary and secondary levels teaching/reinforcing Protective Behaviors. They are available through ASTOP, 430 Division St. Fond du Lac, Wisconsin 54938.

Also available from ASTOP is "Feeling Safe, Standing Strong" for secondary level.

S.A.V.E. is the elementary level curriculum recently revised. It has been taught by the Community Safety Education Police for the past 20 years in Madison schools. It is available from Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin, 214 Hamilton St., Madison, Wisconsin 53703. Fax (608) 256-3378.

Living Safely for People with Special Needs is available from Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin.

Enhanced Choices for Teens is a beautiful manual by Colleen Wingrove. It is available through Prevent Child Abuse Wisconsin. This manual is based on Gardner's philosophy of Multiple Intelligence.

PB Trainers are currently presenting workshops to schools through the Cooperative Educational Services Agencies in Wisconsin, funded by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

A Speech and Language Clinician at both elementary and secondary levels is using the Living Safely curriculum and finding it extremely useful for students with Down Syndrome. In the same school the Guidance Counselor is using it in her counseling and teaching sessions.

A new evaluation tool is being developed by a retired School Social Worker who is also a PB trainer, which will be included in the new Training for Trainers manual.

Thanks for the opportunity.

Yours for a safer world, Donna Fortin

New Publications

"Choose with Care Recruitment Manual" is a practical guide for children organizations in selecting people who will be directly involved in their programme. The strategies developed in this manual are specifically designed to fit the needs of non-governmental organizations to ensure that children under care are protected from the risk of sexual exploitation. For better understanding and use of this guide manual, its publishers, ECPAT Australia and MacKillop Family Services are offering training workshops to manual uses on how to carry out the Choose with Care approach.
